LETTER FROM THE EDITOR. . .
The other day, an old man in a land yacht just drifted into my lane and nearly took me out. I honked at him, but he just flipped me off and went on his way and I was reminded of how helpless we are on motorcycles around raging cagers. In the old days we used to carry around a logging chain we’d use to lock up the old Pan Head outside the local watering hole. A little whack from that chain went a long way to reminding drivers to stay in their own lane. Now, being older and (somewhat) wiser, we know better than to escalate a potential road rage incident - but boy howdy, some of these clowns are just begging for a smack.
And, it’s not just the drunk and inattentive cagers we have to worry about nowadays. Studies show that texting and driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident than a DUI! Folks, keep plenty of separation and keep your head on a swivel: we don’t want to lose any readers on the road. It’s not enough anymore to just assume the cagers don’t see you - you have to pretend there’s a million dollar bounty on your head and every car
and truck on the road is out to collect it.
***NEWS FLASH!
The 4th Annual “Radar’s Run for Fallen Friends” will be on May 7th, 2017.
The ride is in memory of Carl Brent “Radar” Estep, and all proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The ride will start at The Landing in Liberty, MO and end at Knuck- leheads in KC. For more information go to www.facebook.com/radars.run
Gail’s new St. Louis location, Gateway Harley Davidson, is up and running - bringing the “Gail’s” customer service experience to St. Louis. If you find yourself on the east side of the state, drop in and say “hi”. A lot of the KC staff has been working over there to help them get up to speed, and I’m sure they’d love to see a familiar face.
It’s been a great winter for riding: it’s been so nice in the KC area that snowbirds from Florida have been coming up here to enjoy the weather!
Between the nice weather and not competing with the playoffs, attendance was up at this year’s show. And, not only were there more attendees, we had nearly 300 bikes on display! If there’s another indoor show in the Midwest with that many bikes under one roof, let me know aboutit-Iwanttogo!
Next year’s show is on the calendar for January 20th and 21st. We’ll have a big surprise an- nouncement we should be able to tell you about by the July issue.
Every year, we strive to do better - both on the magazine and the show. We feel we’ve devel- oped a winning formula over the years, and the key component in that formula is surrounding yourself with the best pros you can find. One of those pros is Tony Frey, Associate Publisher of American Bagger. This is his fourth year of helping us choose the “best of the best” baggers. There are so many beautiful bikes, entered in so many categories, I’m glad I’m not the one that has to pick and choose! Tony has been all over the country, judging and writing about baggers for years, so his expertise is priceless in making our show the best in the Midwest.
Sadly, though, some of those pros have to move on. Rick and Sandy Anderson, of Anderson Graphics, who have been our Graphic Designer, Office Manager and Chief Bottle Washer for nearly 30 years are retiring. It will be tough to find someone who can ride herd on an unruly editorial staff, read my mind and interface with advertisers so smoothly. We wish them all the best!
Until next time, ride safe! Ralph Roades
PS. Time flies! The July announcement is here today. At next year’s show, we’ll be giving away a brand new Street Bob FXDB in Vivid Black, sponsored by Gail’s Harley-Davidson! Entering is easy: You can mail in your entry on a 3x5 postcard with your name, address, phone number and email to:
Wide Open Magazine, 2908 S Hedges Ave., Independence, MO 64052
Or, you can register in person at the show. Only one entry per person. The drawing will be held at the show on Sunday, January 21st and one lucky winner will be riding on a shiny new Street Bob next summer! (No purchase necessary.)
